LESSON 1: Ethics vs. Emotional Labor
Massage therapists often enter the field to help others - but helping can become harmful when boundaries are unclear.
What Are Ethics?
Ethics are professional standards that guide behavior, decision-making, and client care.
They help ensure:
Client safety
Professional integrity
Legal compliance
Trust within the therapeutic relationship
What Is Emotional Labor?
Emotional labor is the process of:
Managing your own emotions
Absorbing or responding to client emotions
Maintaining a calm, supportive presence
This includes:
Listening to client stories
Holding space for grief, stress, or trauma
Regulating your tone, body language, and energy

Where It Gets Blurry
Ethics ask:
“What is appropriate?”
Emotional labor asks:
“What am I carrying?”
When emotional labor goes unmanaged, therapists may:
Overextend themselves
Avoid setting limits
Feel responsible for client outcomes
Stay in sessions longer than appropriate
Reflection Time!
Think about a recent session:
Did you feel like you were “holding more” than just the massage?
What did that feel like in your body?
Write your response before continuing.
