Client dependency occurs when a client begins to rely on the therapist beyond the intended scope of care.
Healthy Therapeutic Relationship
In a healthy dynamic:
The client participates in their own care
The therapist provides appropriate support
Boundaries are clear and consistent
Progress is collaborative
Signs of Dependency
A client may be becoming dependent if they:
Request more frequent sessions than necessary
Seek emotional support beyond the scope of practice
Contact you outside professional boundaries
Express inability to function without sessions
Resist referrals or additional care providers

Dependency is not always intentional.
It often develops gradually through:
Over-accommodation
Inconsistent boundaries
Emotional over-involvement
Reflection Time
